We have done a few competition classes with our
students going on to become Grand Champions.
Our most famous graduate is Harry Soo of
Slap Yo' Daddy BBQ
.
Harry has taken both our 2006 Pitmaster class and our 2008 competition
BBQ class. He is current appearing on
TLC's Pitmasters cable TV show.
We only do the competition
class on a rare basis for graduates who need emergency help. Our recommendation
is the Pellet Envy Class from Rod Gray
(2009 KCBS team of the year) for those wanting a competition focus. Rod does more competitions in one year
than we have done in the last five. I know Rod and I know
lots of my friends who have taken his class with great success.
As I'm fixin' to get back in competitions myself, Rod's class is
on my personal to do list. Not to steal anything for for resale
just to make myself a better competitor.

2002 PNWBA
Best New Team
(Rookie of the Year)
Teddy Bear BBQ (Konrad Haskins)
We told harry to takes Rod's class but he was
obsessed with winning the California "Rookie of the Year" title
and the timing did not work. So we did the class and Harry
won the trophy. He then took our advice and did Rod's
class.
As Chef Paul on the Pitmasters show has
discovered competition BBQ is a discipline all on its own.
My advice to all aspiring competitors is take Rod's class and taking a judging class and
then judge some contests.
DANGER WILL
ROBINSON
Competition BBQ can be an all time and all money
consuming addiction. The only difference between it and
hard drugs is that so far it's not illegal.
